Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as an attendant or cleaner to help them remain alive. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left the school she attended within two years of her education to pursue a career as an actor. The route she took did not come without challenges. In New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines, her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. The New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. She earned money by doing shifts during the day, as an usherette. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
